Lateral Geosteering Utility

RockWorks | Borehole Operations | Striplogs | Lateral Geo-Steering

The Borehole Operations / Striplogs / Lateral Geo-Steering program is used to illustrate how a single borehole in the database corresponds with a sample Planned Survey datasheet.

• The Planned Survey is based on data within the RockWorks Datasheet.
• The P-Data (e.g., resistivity, gamma, gas) is loaded from the Borehole Manager database.
• The survey points are plotted on the well path polylines.

A new example project folder/database titled "Laterals" is included to illustrate how this program is used (find this project in Documents/RockWorks Data/Laterals which is saved when RockWorks is installed).

Menu Options

• Options: Click this tab to set up the planned survey and general display settings.
  • Planned Survey Datasheet Columns
    • Depth: Select the column from the datasheet that defines depth for the planned survey.
    • Direction: Choose the column from the datasheet that corresponds to planned dip direction.
    • Inclination: Select the column from the datasheet that defines inclination for the planned survey.
  • Borehole: Select the borehole for your planned and actual survey measurements.

• Pay Zone: Select to define offset to show from the top and base of your planned survey. The Width
  • Plot Top: Type in the top offset from the planned survey to the top of payzone.
  • Plot Base: Enter the base offset between the planned survey and the base of payzone.
  • Width: Enter the width for the actual path of the hole while drilling.

• P-Data log selections
  • Track: Select names of existing P-data logs from this project for #1, #2, and #3 by using the dropdown menus. These will help match LWD curves while drilling.
  • Direction: Use the menu to choose display of the curve Up/Down along the hole for each log you select to show.

• Depth Filters: Check this item if the diagrams are to be limited to a specific measured depth range.
  • Minimum: Enter the top depth for the diagram. Typically this will be the measured depth slightly above the horizontal bearing of the hole. Note that if you start the diagram at a depth of 0 and the payzone is fairly deep, you won't get much resolution in the horizontal portion of the well. Compare the examples below.
  • Maximum: Click to type in the base depth to be represented in the diagram.

• Plan Map Options Check this box to append other layers to your diagram. Click each tab to set up the 2D diagram layers.

  • Peripherals: Add a logo, title block, or other peripheral items to your diagram.
  • Border Check this option to include a solid line border around the entire log image and to establish border settings.
  • Output Options: Use these settings to define whether the output graphic is to be saved (or displayed as "untitled"), how the file should be named, and whether it is to be displayed after it is created. It also offers export options. (More info)

  Step-by-Step Summary

  1. You will need to have a Planned or Actual Survey in a Datasheet loaded to use the Striplogs | Lateral Geo-Steering program from the Borehole Operations menu.
     
  2. This program has Options you must set up, Click the Options on the left side menu:

     

     • Select the column from the active datasheet for the Depth, the Direction, and the Inclination values you want to use.
     • The Borehole you choose from the dropdown will be modified by the Geosteering program. Use the button on the selection dropdown to enable this borehole only.
     • The program will modify the output display as selections for Plot Top and Plot Base indicate. Larger offset will show a wider target window above and below the target well path.
       
     • Select the P-data Tracks you have available in the borehole along with the Direction you would like to view the curve(s). It will read the datasheet containing the P-Data values and create those filled curves, filled with cold-to-hot color bands.
       
     • Depth Filter: Type in the measured depths for expected target top and base for the lateral portion of the borehole.
       • Minimum: Enter the top depth for the diagram. Typically this will be the measured depth slightly above the horizontal bearing of the hole. Note that if you start the diagram at a depth of 0 and the payzone is fairly deep, you won't get much resolution in the horizontal portion of the well. Compare the examples below.
       • Maximum: Click to type in the base depth to be reprented in the diagram.
       
       

     • 

     The graphs will be rescaled and assembled into the composite diagram. The diagram will be displayed in a RockPlot2D tab in the Options window, if requested.

  3. View / save / manipulate / print / export the chart in the RockPlot2D window.
     

     To create a 3D diagram:

     • Click the 3D Diagram button at the top of the screen
     • Enter the menu settings, as described above.
     • Click the Continue button to proceed.
     
     

     The program will read the Planned Survey and Actual Survey data and generate the polyline path tubes as requested. Payzone surfaces, depth connectors, and the reference cage will be appended if activated. The completed diagram will be displayed in a RockPlot3D tab in the Options window, if requested.

  4. View / save / manipulate / print / export the scene in the RockPlot3D window.
     Tip: If your image looks really flat, use the View | Dimensions menu to change the Vertical Exaggeration setting to something > 1. Some diagrams may need to be stretched by a factor of 25 or 50 to see the detail in the horizontal well.
