As you work in a project within RockWorks, most of the program settings - the thousands of check-boxes, file names, and other options that you establish in the program menus - are stored in two files on your computer.
- Project-Specific Settings: These settings (which are the vast majority) are stored in a file named "project.ini" in the "System" folder that is created inside each Project Folder. Examples of these settings would include gridding and contouring options, striplog setup, etc.
- Global Settings: These settings, which probably won't vary much from project to project (and which would be very annoying to change as you move to different projects) are stored in a file "system.ini" in the program's main System folder. Many of these settings are established in the Setup | Preferences window, such as whether the Help window is displayed on program startup, or the default font for RockPlot2D.
RockWorks contains some handy tools for managing these settings, listed below by functionality.
- Creating a new project: As you create a new project in RockWorks, you have the option of bringing in the project-specific menu settings from an existing project. (You can bring other project data in, as well.) This can be helpful if the data is similar and you want to start work in the new project based on where you left off in the old.
- Making backups: Use the Setup | Export option to store a copy of your current Global and/or Project settings (for all menus) in "ini" file(s) - handy if you're fiddling around with settings and may want to go back to a previous configuration.
- Restoring settings from backups: Use the Settings | Import program to bring into RockWorks a copy of the global and/or project settings (for all menus) previously saved.
- Technical support and backups: Export the settings for the current menu you're working in, using the Menu | Save Current Menu Settings to RwMnu File option in the menu window itself. These menu lists can be used to store a "snapshot" of the settings you are current working with. They can also be used by our support staff to trouble-shoot problems you're experiencing with the software. Use the Load Menu Settings from RwMnu File option to bring into the current menu an existing saved menu list. Use the Reset Menu Settings to Defaults to reset the items for the current menu to factory default status.

- Sharing settings with a co-worker:
- Use the Save Current Menu Settings to RwMnu File and Load Menu Settings from RwMnu File options to share settings for specific program options with co-workers.
- Use the Setup | Export and Import programs to share all program settings with co-workers.
- Adding a program to a playlist:
- Use the Save Current Menu Settings to RwMnu File option to save the current program's settings to an external settings file. Use the Playlist's File | Import RwMnu File option to import that program and those settings into the playlist.
