Point Text Datasheet

Introduction

How to enter Point Text data

Use: The LogPlot Point Text datasheet is used to list depth points and one or more columns of alphanumeric data to be plotted as text in a Text Column. Such text could range from sample numbers, to measurements of moisture content or consistency, to extended textual listings or notes. These text entries will simply be plotted as labels at the listed depths.

A Point Text datasheet can have a single column of values or multiple columns. You can have more than one Point Text datasheet in a data file.

Alternative Datasheets:
For text to be linked to a lithology pattern column, use a Lithology datasheet.
For text columns which offer more formatting, refer to the Interval Text Column (in the log design) and Interval Text datasheet.
For point-sampled numeric data to be displayed as a curve on the log, use a Point Data datasheet.

Corresponding log design component: Text listed in this datasheet will be plotted on the log within the Text column of the same name.

Corresponding RockWorks data table: P-Text

Right-Click Options: When you right-click in any of the Point Text datasheet cells, you have the following options:

Cut, Copy, Paste    Insert/Append/Delete Rows      Manipulate Columns     Edit Data Page Name     Add/Delete/Rename Columns    Edit Columns and Groups    Delete Data Page    Move

This example illustrates the use of several Point Text columns in the datasheet and log.

  1. To add a new Point Text datasheet to the current data file, or to add a new column to an existing Point Text datasheet, you have two choices:

    Automatic:

If there are already Text column(s) in the current log design to which you willl be linking the data, you can use the Data | Update Data File from Log Design menu option to insert one or more Point Text datasheets in the current data file. The column names in the datasheet(s) will match the column names in the log design. The grouping of the columns in single/multiple datasheets will depend on the Group assignments in the log design.

    Manual:

You can also use the Data | New Data Page | Point Text menu option to manually insert a new datasheet.

Group Name: Type in the name to assign to the datasheet's tab or group. If you leave this blank, it will default to the name for the first text column you assign below.

New Name: Type in the name to assign to the first text column in the datasheet. Because Point Text datasheets can have multiple columns, LogPlot uses the column names to match data to the items in the log design.

    Click OK.

The program will add to the data file a Point Text datasheet labeled with the selected Group Name and with two blank columns: Depth, and a column with the Name you defined.

  2. Enter the text information.

Depth: In this column you must list the depth at which you want the text to be plotted. Placement of Text Column text is done similarly to descriptive text. The declared depth will represent the top of a "box" that the program creates for the text entry.

Columns 3 +: These columns are where you can list the alphanumeric text recorded at the listed depth points.

    The Column Names

The names displayed as column headers within the Point Text datasheet are used to match the data to particular Text column in the log design. For example, the data in the "Remarks" column will be plotted in the "Remarks" Text column in the log design.

Shortcut: Use the right-click options to add/rename/delete columns.

    The Data Listing

To enter the actual data into the data page cells, you can use the <Tab> key to advance from cell to cell, and from the end of one row to the beginning of the next. This type of text is typically comprised of short labels. The program will wrap the text automatically within the Text Column. The program will honor "hard" carriage returns (noting them with "/*" characters) and leading spaces.

If there is no data for a depth, you may leave the cell blank. That text label will simply be omitted from the log.

Shortcut: If you already have this data in a tabular format in another application, you can copy the data there and then paste it into this datasheet using the Edit | Paste command.

Shortcut: Rather than typing in the text description into the small cell, you can double-click on the text cell to bring up the Description Editor window.
