Applying a Pinchout Filter to Grid Models

RockWorks | ModOps | Grid | Filters | Pinchout Filter

This program is designed to edit surfaces representing the top and base of a stratigraphic unit. It adjusts the surfaces to filter out areas where the unit thickness is very thin, or to remove material that falls inside or outside a defined polygon or group of polygons contained in an Rw3D file. The program reads existing Top and Base grid files (.RwGrd) and outputs two new grid files containing the modified Top and Base surfaces.

Menu Options

  • Input Grids: Select the Top and Base Surface grid (.RwGrd) files.
  • Output Grids: Enter the names of the Top and Base Surfaces that will be output by the program.

  • Adjust Surface: Select the adjustment option you with to use.
    • Bottom to Top Surface: If this option is selected, the elevations of the Base Surface will be adjusted to match the elevations of the Top Surface in areas where the unit thickness is less than the Minimum Thickness or where the area falls inside or outside of the defined polygon.
    • Both to Midpoint: If this option is selected, the program will calculate the average elevation between the two surfaces and assign that value to cells that meet the defined criteria.
    • Top to Bottom Surface: If this option is selected, the Top Surface will be adjusted to match the Base Surface in areas that meet the defined criteria.

  • Thickness: Select this option to define the Minimum Thickness below which the unit should pinch out.
  • Polygon: Select this option to define the pinchout area using a polygon table or RW2D file. The program will force the unit to pinch out either inside or outside the defined polygon(s). This option is useful when working with surficial units and you want to clip the units based on the extents of polygons from a geologic map.

  • Step-by-Step Summary

    1. Be sure you have RockWorks grids (.RwGrd file) for the Top and Base surfaces already created, for input into this program.
    2. Select the ModOps | Grid | Filters | Pinchout Fliter menu option.
    3. Enter the requested menu settings, described above.
    4. Click the Continue button to proceed.

       The program reads existing Top and Base grid files (.RwGrd) and outputs two new grid files containing the modified Top and Base surfaces.

       The requested diagram(s) will be displayed in a RockPlot2D tab

    5. You can adjust any of the settings in the Options window and then click the Continue button again to regenerate the diagram(s).
    6. View / save / manipulate / export / print the diagram in the RockPlot2D or RockPlot3D window.
