Land Grid Table - File | Import Commercial Land Grid Data
If you have purchased land grid data from a commercial vendor and wish to use this data as a means of spotting wells or leases and/or for creating section or lease maps, this data must be imported into the RockWorks Land Grid Table, modified if necessary, then used to create the customized RockWorks land grid library. You can also import from the large RockWare LandBase if you wish to work with a small subset of that large database.
This import tool can read data from these sources:
- IHS (Petroleum Information / Dwights)
- TMC (Topographic Mapping Company)
- Tobin / GII/ASCII-31
- Tobin / TDRBM II
- White Star
- RockWare LandBase
! This program requires RockWorks Advanced
Menu Options
Step-by-Step Summary
- Clear current data and start new: Check this box if the current listing is to be replaced with the new data. Leave this unchecked if the new data is to be appended to the current listing.
- Input File: Click to the right to browse for the name of the commercial land grid file that is to be imported. You may need to set the Files of Type to "all files" in order to see files with different file name extensions. (If you've selected the RockWare Landbase, this prompt will not be displayed.)
- Principal Meridian: Click on this item to view a map of the U.S. Select the BLM zone in which you are working by clicking in the appropriate radio button. This setting is important in order to define the correct placement of the Range and Township data.
- Filter: Insert a check in this box if you wish to import just a subset of the entire commercial data file. This can be helpful if the commercial file is large. If you leave this check-box cleared, the program will import the entire data set. If you turn on the data filter, you’ll need to enter the filter dimensions; expand this heading to access these settings:
- Western Most Range: Enter the number and choose East or West to reflect the westernmost Range in the commercial data file to be imported into the data sheet. Example: 70W
- Eastern Most Range: Enter the number and choose East or West to reflect the easternmost Range in the commercial data file to be imported into the data sheet. Example: 68W
- Southern Most Township: Enter the number and choose North or South to reflect the southernmost Township in the commercial data file to be imported into the data sheet. Example: 4S
- Northern Most Township: Enter the number and choose North or South to reflect the northernmost Township in the commercial data file to be imported into the data sheet. Example: 3S
- Expand the System Tables heading at the bottom of the the Project Manager pane, along the left side of the main RockWorks window.
- Double-click on the Land Grid item. The program will load the default Land Grid Table into the editor. See Land Grid Tables Overview for details about the file structure.
- In this editor, click on the File menu and choose the Import Commercial Land Grid Data option.
- Select the type of data being imported from the pop-up menu.
- The program will offer you the option of saving the existing land grid table to a backup file before importing the new data. We recommend that you choose Yes.
- Type in a name for the ASCII (text) version of the current land grid table. The default file name extension is "TAB".
- In the Land Grid Import window, enter the menu options, discussed above.
- Click on the Continue button to proceed.
- The program will read the data in the selected input land grid file, filter out Township and Range information if requested, and display the land grid numbers and Section corner coordinates in the data sheet. This will now be the default Land Grid table in the program's global database.
- If the program displays an error message, it's possible that you selected the wrong Input Format. Select Cancel to terminate the import process, double-check the source of your data, and try again.
- Click the Land Grid button along the left side of the editor window.
- Click the Use Imported Land Grid files option, and browse for the folder where you want the RockWorks libraries to be created.
