Importing LogPlot DAT Files - Select Files

Step 2: Start the Import and Select the LogPlot data files to be imported.

1. Launch RockWorks as necessary.
    
2. Access the Borehole Manager.
   
   
3. Create a new project, or open the existing project, into which the LogPlot files will be imported.
    
4. Select the File | Import | LogPlot option. You'll see the Logplot Import Wizard window.
   
5. Choose the LogPlot data files to be translated to RockWorks format: 
6. • Click on the Select button to browse for the LogPlot DAT file(s) to be translated.
   • In the Select Files window, browse to the folder where the LogPlot DAT files reside.
   • In the Browse window that is displayed, hold the Shift key down and click on all of the LogPlot DAT files to be imported.
   • When all of the DAT files are shown as highlighted, click the Open button.

You will be returned to the Import screen. The selected DAT files will be shown in the list.

! If you need to remove any of the files from the listing, click on the name, and then click the Remove Selected button at the top of the window. Hold down the Shift key to select multiple, sequential names. Hold down the Ctrl key to select non-adjacent names.
Note that the removed files will not be removed from your computer, just from this list.

! These files must have a similar format (i.e. the same assortment of data tabs) in order for the translation to work as a batch.  This is because the import is based on the entities in the user-selected reference file (next step) and any DAT files with different entities won't be recognized.  Dissimilar DAT files must be run in separate batches.

6. Decide what should happen if a borehole already exists in the project database.
   • Skip:  If a borehole ID exists in the RockWorks database, the importer will skip the LogPlot DAT file with the same name. 
     For example, if there is already a borehole named "MW4" in the project, the program should not import any new data from the DAT file named "MW4.DAT," and the original well will be left intact.
   • Replace: If a borehole ID exists in the RockWorks database, the importer will delete all existing data for that hole and replace it with the contents of the LogPlot DAT file with the same name that you have mapped for import. 
     For example, if there is already a hole named "MW4" in the project, the importer will delete all data for that borehole from the database, and then import the data from "MW4.dat".  The original well record will be completely replaced.
     ! Be sure about this. All existing data for existing holes will be lost. 
     
   • Create New:  If a borehole ID exists in the RockWorks database, the importer will create a new borehole record (with a new name, appending "_1") for all LogPlot DAT files you've mapped for import that have the same name. 
     For example, if there is already a borehole named "MW4" in the project, and you're importing data from a file named "MW4.dat," the program will create a new record named "MW4_1" and import the data into that new record, leaving the original well record unchanged.
   • Update Existing: If a borehole ID exists in the RockWorks database, the importer will not delete that well's data before import. Instead it will add to the borehole record any new data types that you've selected for import.  If you select data types that already exist for that hole, then those will be replaced.
     Example: Let's say there is already a borehole named "MW4" in the project, with basic well location information and Lithology data. In this import process, you request import of curve data; these will be added to the existing borehole record.
     
     
7. Click the Next button to proceed to the next step.
