Understand the Pattern Origin

It is important, during pattern design, that you understand that the origin of each pattern block is the lower-left corner of the editing area. You should start your design in this corner and build it upward and to the right from there. This will prevent a large amount of white space from occurring between repeating pattern cells.

Compare the examples below. In the upper example, the pattern starts in the origin. In the lower example, the pattern starts above and to the right of the origin, resulting in more blank space in the repeating block.

The two examples below differ by the addition of single dots in the pattern on the bottom. This results in white space between repeating lines.
