RockWorks | Utilities | Grid | Grids -> Groundwater Vistas Matrix
If you have created a Stratigraphy model or other grids in RockWorks, you can use those grids to define layer elevations in a Groundwater Vistas MODFLOW model. In order to do this, you need to:
- create a Groundwater Vistas Model File (.gwv file) that falls inside the extents of your RockWorks project
- create a Groundwater Vistas Discretization File (.disrw file) for import into RockWorks
- make sure that the number of layers in the .gwv file matches the number of layers you have defined using RockWorks grids
- make sure that the RockWorks grids have already been created
This document describes broadly the RockWorks menu settings. For a detailed description of the file types and how to generate them, please refer to the separate topic, Using RockWorks to Define Layer Elevations, Zones and Matrix Values in Groundwater Vistas.

Step-by-Step Summary
Menu Options
- Discretization File: Click on this tab to browse for the name of the Discretization file (.disrw) that you created in Groundwater Vistas. When loaded into RockWorks, you'll see a summary of the model in the lower pane of the window.
- RockWorks Grids: Click on this tab to select the .RwGrd files that you want to use to define the layer elevations. These might be grids that are part of a Stratigraphy Model, or that were created using other gridding tools in RockWorks.
- Output matrix: Click on this tab to access these settings:
- Matrix File Output: Use this prompt to assign a name to the .matrix file being created. This file will be imported into Groundwater Vistas.
- Interpolation Options: Choose the method that you want to use to estimate the elevations for each layer at each cell center, by clicking in the radio button.
Step-by-Step Summary
This program requires that two or more RockWorks-format grid models already exist.
- Access the RockWorks Utilities datasheet.
- Select the Grid | Grids -> Groundwater Vistas Matrix menu option.
- Enter the requested menu options, described above.
- Click the Finish button in the final tab to create the .matrix file.
- In Groundwater Vistas, go to Props | Import | RockWorks Layer Elevation File.
- Select the .matrix file created above.
The Groundwater Vistas .gwv file will be updated with the imported elevations (as displayed in the image at the top of this topic).
